Cooking Innovations: Air Fry

by Howie Lee

Wings out the oven

Air Fry is a Convection mode that is designed to produce foods with a crispier exterior than traditional oven cooking for a delicious way to get the crunch without the extra calories.

If you’re thinking, “wait, I have a convection oven...what’s the difference” you’re not alone. Both cooking technologies use a fan to circulate air around the oven cavity for - among other benefits - faster, more even cooking.

Air Frying moves the heat source to the top of the oven and supercharges the air circulation process with hotter air and faster fan speeds. The result is crispy, never greasy, fried food, with locked-in moisture.

It works for both fresh and frozen foods, and you can forget about dealing with hot messy oil. Even better, you will have more room in the oven to make larger batches compared to predecessor countertop air fryers.

Using this mode is easy. All you need to do is set the temperature and the time duration. The temperature can be set between 300°F - 500°F.  Air fryer trays allow even heat distribution to flow through and under for uniform texture. That means you get crispiest crisp without needing to flip or rotate half way through. Here are recommended temperatures and times for just about anything provided by CookSmarts.
