Foods You Should Not Store in Your Fridge, Part 2

by Waverly Wilde

How to Store Melon

Store whole melons, such as watermelon or cantaloupe, on the counter for the best flavor. Once they are cut, keep them in the fridge for up to 4 days.

How to Store Potatoes

Potatoes should not be refrigerated. Store them in a dark, cool place. In the fridge, they'll turn gritty and sweet (but not like sweet potatoes). If it's too warm, that causes them to sprout. Potatoes will keep several months when stored properly. However, Mr. Potato Head will last indefinitely.

How to Store Garlic

Garlic hates light and moisture, almost as much as vampires hate garlic. Store the bulbs in a cool, dry place with decent ventilation. Whole bulbs can keep this way for up to six months. Once the seal is broken, use up that clove in 10 days.

How to Store Hot Sauce

If you have hot sauce in your bag, great, keep it there! There's plenty of vinegar to stop any pesky bacteria from developing. Plus, if you like it hot, those chiles are more potent at room temp.

How to Store Nuts

While lower temperatures prevent nut oils from going rancid, too much cold can ruin their flavor. Nuts should be stored in an airtight container in the pantry. They'll last a few months this way. Place them in the freezer if you need them longer.

How to Store Avocados

Unlike garlic, avocados don't entirely hate the fridge. You can put them there to curb their ripening. However, avocados are more enjoyable at room temperature, where they will ripen faster. If you're impatient, place them in a paper bag with a banana or apple to ripen more quickly.

How to Store Basil

Basil, like other soft herbs, should be treated more like cut flowers than produce. Trim the ends and store them in a glass filled with water, then loosely cover the leaves with a plastic bag. This keeps the moisture in.

How to Store Cucumbers

Never put those cukes in the fridge, well unless you have to. They are best stored on the counter at room temp and enjoyed within a few days. If you have to refrigerate them, wrap them in plastic to keep excess moisture away.

How to Store Olive Oil

Don't store your olive oil anywhere near heat, like near the side of the stove or in a cabinet above, and definitely not in the fridge. It will harden. Keep the oil in a cool dark place.

How to Store Butter

Yes, dairy should be kept in the fridge. But you can keep butter outside, and you will be glad you did. The refrigerator hardens butter, making it tough to spread. Room temp butter is what your toast craves. You can store it this way for about a week in reasonable temperatures.
