by Ronald Elias

Light the candles, grab your favorite appliance, and get ready to sing -- it’s KitchenAid’s 100th birthday! To celebrate, we’ve put together 10 facts that you might not know about your favorite appliance brand.

1. The Weight of Baking Appliances

The 1919 Model H mixer was just a smidge bigger than the one in your kitchen now. OK, maybe more than a smidge -- according to an NPR story, it weighed in at roughly 65 pounds!!

2. Shades of Grey Mixers

Colors are synonymous with the KitchenAid brand now, it wasn’t always available in so many shades. In 1955, the KitchenAid stand mixer only came in six colors; petal pink, island green, sunny yellow, satin chrome, antique copper, and white.

3. One Appliance, Two Appliance, Three Appliance, Four

While KitchenAid may be known for its mixer, it’s been making other amazing home appliances for years -- the company released its first home dishwasher in 1949.

4. Taste The Rainbow

Everybody has their favorite appliance color, but do you know how many colors KitchenAid mixers come in? Over 40! Take that, Skittles!

5. Finally, it’s time for Refrigerators!

You may be thankful that KitchenAid makes appliances for all of your kitchen needs, but it didn’t make fridges until 1986. That was the same year the “Oprah Winfrey Show” started!

6. All that Glitters is Golden Dishwashers

In 1970, KitchenAid brought out some new colors: Harvest Wheat and Avocado. They also released a portable Golden Harvest Dishwasher.

7.  Taking Appliances to the Next Level

Major appliances weren’t enough for the ever-creative KitchenAid. In 1993 it added blenders, hand mixers, and food processors to its expanding portfolio.

8. The Future is Today

Induction cooktops may still seem like some amazing technology of the future, but KitchenAid first brought them to market over ten years ago in 2008.

9.Getting Attached to Appliance Attachments

KitchenAid is known for its versatility, but we bet you didn’t know that there are over 80 different mixer attachments you can get for your favorite appliance!

10.  A Wide Family of KitchenAid Mastery

You know and love KitchenAid, but did you know they are owned by Whirlpool? Yup! The Whirlpool Corporation bought them in 1986!

It’s hard to believe that KitchenAid has been making awesome appliances for 100 years, but the brand has continued to be a mainstay for the American family -- and for good reason too! And for all your appliance needs, remember there’s only one local name to trust: Grand!
